Are you looking for sexy, wacky, bizarre or weird costume ideas for Mardis Gras? With this annual event right around the corner, there are plenty of options available. there is no other place like Bourbon Street on fat Tuesday that allows such freedom and creativity with your attire.

Despite the common perception, the majority of Mardi Gras is family oriented events and parades. It is true, however, that some people get extremely creative with daring costumes. although Mardi Gras events last for several weeks, most people save the costuming for fat Tuesday. if you are young and single, you will want to visit Bourbon Street on fat Tuesday. if you have small children, this is the one day I would suggest you explore other areas of New Orleans.

So what are your options when it comes to Mardi Gras costumes? one of the most common choices you will see is French Colonial outfits. With the steep French history associated with the Big Easy, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people revert to the dress of the late 1700s to early 1800s. if you go this route, don’t forget to have a drink at Lafitte’s Blacksmith, the oldest purported tavern in the United States.

Clowns are also extremely common during the reveling of Mardi Gras. the options here range from court jester styled costumes to mimes. Bourbon Street is known for its street performers that display their talents for tourists. These costumes can range from the simple to the elaborate, but don’t forget to include your beaded necklaces.

If you take a walk through the French Quarter you will note several businesses that sell voodoo related merchandise. New Orleans is renowned for its rich Voodoo history. although rooted in African culture, most voodoo-style costumes reflect the perception of that religion rather than replicating the true traditional dress.

You will no doubt see a few pirates among party goers. Tavern wenches and one-eyed bandits are a long-time tradition among Mardi Gras costumes. the city’s proximity to the Gulf has made pirates a legend among revelers. Don’t forget your grog if you choose a pirate costume.

Last, but not least, are the elaborately painted bodies that will roam the French Quarter. I personally am not daring enough to allow my body to be used as a canvas. However, I must admit that I am fascinated by the artistic creativity that is involved in creating a costume from bare bones, or rather flesh.

There are no holds barred when it comes to costume ideas for fat Tuesday. Select a costume that brings out your personal and individual creativity. Most of all have fun and top off your costume with a few strands of Mardis Gras beads.

Spring is coming, the wildflowers are blooming, and the price of gas at the pump is going up.

Oliver Santiago, of Hacienda Heights in Southern California, learned the hard way not to start up Highway 1 on the big Sur Coast without a full tank of gas.

He stopped at a station just north of San Simeon on Sunday night, Santiago said, and had to fill up his family minivan during a holiday road trip up the coast. The price was $5.29 at the pump.

“We had another 100 miles to go,” he said. “We had no choice.”

on Monday, Santiago was gassing up for the return trip at the Valero station at Lighthouse and Prescott avenues at $3.87 a gallon, one of the lower-cost stations on the Peninsula, according to gasbuddy.com. The family had stayed overnight, visited Fisherman’s Wharf, and was ready to go home.

The statewide average shows gasoline prices rose from about $3.70 per gallon to $4 per gallon between Jan. 1 and Monday, higher than the national average increase from $3.35 to $3.52 during the same period.

The cheapest price at the pump in the county Monday, according to gasbuddy.com, was $3.65 a gallon at the 7-Eleven station at 1991 Natividad Road, Salinas.

low prices on the Peninsula listed by the same service were $3.83 per gallon at the Alliance station at 1550 Fremont Blvd., and 7-Eleven station at 1212 Fremont, both in Seaside, and $3.85 per gallon at the Quik Stop station at 2407 N. Fremont St., Monterey.

The surge in gas prices follows an increase in the price of oil due to, among other things, tensions with Iran and refiners suspending operations to switch the type of gasoline they make.

Gladys Gonzalez of Marina commutes to Pacific Grove to work and was filling her GMC Sierra pickup at the Valero station.

“It’s expensive,” she said. “I’m thinking of buying a smaller car, but I don’t have the money. I’m stuck.”

It’s hard to make a living in the best of times, said taxi driver John Petty, who was gassing up his Ford Crown Victoria Yellow Cab. “It’s had a big effect on me and other cab drivers.”

He doesn’t get a special break on gas, Petty said, and had to buy his cab from the company, but works as an independent operator, purchasing his own fuel.

Up in the San Francisco Bay Area, he said, “it’s all $4 a gallon up there. They use the Middle East to raise the price.”

Petty commented that he can’t automatically raise his fares when the price of gasoline goes up. “That has to be approved” by the Monterey County Regional Taxi Authority.

most Bay Area taxi drivers are going with hybrids like the Toyota Prius, he said. “If I could do that I’d be able to pay off the car and still have money left over.”

Kim Randall of Palo Alto said she saw the Valero price sign Monday, said, “Oh my goodness!” and turned her Jeep Grand Cherokee into the station.

She travels a lot as an educator for the Discovery Channel, Randall said, and was in Seattle on Friday, where gas was $3.56 a gallon, and was shocked at the jump in price when she got back home.

“Last year I drove 3,000 miles,” she said. “I usually take the BART” (Bay Area Rapid Transit).

Nearby, the Circle K station at David and Hawthorne avenues drew a crowd of cars lining up for $3.89-a-gallon gas.

“I read this morning that gas will be up to $4.25 a gallon by the end of April,” said Lois DeFord of Pacific Grove. “We’re going to have to consolidate errands.”

She, her daughter and grandchild were heading down to the big Sur Coast. “I don’t see why not,” DeFord commented, “even if the price is going up.”

Pat Stofle of Carmel, a volunteer guide at Monterey Bay Aquarium, said she usually gasses up at Circle K because it is often the cheapest station in town.

Filling her Volkswagen Bug, she commented, “I love this little car!”

High gas prices have us gasping for breath and they are not going to be going down anytime soon, if ever. it will affect everything that is transported that we consume. Families are scouring their budget for any way to cut expenses. here are a few ideas to save on gas. Each one by themselves may not make a huge difference but if you try to incorporate as many as you can, you should see a noticeable difference. Every extra mile counts.

1. When driving, Roll up windows on highway. while many people think they’re saving money by turning off the air-conditioner, it actually creates a strong drag if you are driving fast with the windows down, and is worse for your fuel economy. if you are driving slowly around town, turn off the air-conditioner and roll down the windows but roll them up on the highway.

2. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car’s gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. Your car’s air filter keeps impurities from damaging the inside of your engine. not only will replacing a dirty air filter save gas, it will protect your engine. Fuel Economy can benefit up to 10%. A low restriction air filter may add another 10% benefit.

3. Replace spark plugs and wires. Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4.1 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done. if you replace a faulty oxygen sensor on your car, your gas mileage may improve as much as 40 percent. Pay attention to those check engine lights.

4. Remove Excess Weight. clean out the trunk and other spaces in the vehicle to reduce the vehicle’s weight. This added weight puts a higher load on the engine reducing fuel economy.

5. keep Tires Properly Inflated. You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.

6. Consider buying a moped or scooter. Don’t laugh. if all you really need is something to buzz around town on, the average 50cc moped is capable to run at 100 miles per gallon, but in most cases only able to reach top speeds of 35 miles per hour. Some 50cc models are capable of even better fuel efficiency. as you go up the ladder the speed increases, but the fuel efficiency goes down. Average mopeds at 150cc can crest at 60 miles per hour, but their fuel efficiency goes down to about 75-90 miles per gallon. at average mopeds at 250cc can reach higher speeds (nearly 80 miles per hour), but their fuel efficiency goes down to 60 miles per gallon.

George Washington was the first president of the United States and considered one of the best.

George Washington is a much-admired person in many respects. as the first president of the United States, he set the course upon which the current three-branch system of federal government is based. George Washington is perhaps the one person who can most claim the title of Founding Father.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. he was the son of well off plantation owner and spent his you in relative comfort. During his youth, the British Empire ruled the 13 colonies. Despite what you might assume, he was hardly a revolutionary and his stated goal was to become an officer in the British Army obviously, that goal never came to fruition.

As George Washington grew into adulthood, he became an expert surveyor of land. he worked in what was then called the American West and purchased vast tracts of land with other family members. he eventually owned over 56 thousand acres.

In 1752, George Washington joined the Virginia militia. he quickly became an officer and played a pivotal part in the French and Indian War. the French had moved into the Ohio Valley, which aggravated the British to no end. Washington was given the task of telling the French to leave the territory. when they refused, Washington suggested a fort be built and his superiors agreed.

As the fort was being built, Washington was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and given the task of defending it. Leading 159 men, he was victorious in minor skirmishes. Instead of being promoted to an officer position in the British Army, he was told no colonial could attain the position. Bitter, Washington resigned and the French turned the tide.

Desperate to turn the tide, the British Governor of Virginia reinstated George Washington by appointing him Commander of all the Colonial forces. within three years, the French were defeated and Washington was famous. he married Martha Curtis in 1959, but they never had any children.

In 1775, the colonies formed a Continental Congress to address the conflict with the British. George Washington was elected Commander of all colonial forces. War had already broken out in Massachusetts. Washington and his troops soon joined and the British were defeated in Boston in 1776. By summer, however, the British has sent more troops and defeated the colonial forces on numerous occasions.

Facing total defeat and a lack of money, George Washington did an amazing thing. he rallied his rag tag colonial forces and paid their wages out of his own finances. By late December of 1776, the colonial forces were starting to turn the tide against the British. after more victories in 1777, the French offered their support. It took a few years to arrive, but Washington was eventually able to completely defeat the British. in 1781, the British surrendered much of the east coast. in 1783, a treaty was signed granting the colonies their independence.

On February 4, 1789, George Washington was elected the first President of the United States of America with John Adams as vice president. as the first president, he put in place many precedents and traditions including:

1. Being referred to as mr. President.

2. Refused to be declared King.

3. the creation of an inaugural event and ball.

4. Swearing on a bible when taking the oath of president.

5. Moving the capital to Washington, D.C.

6. Agreeing to the passage of the bill of Rights.

7. Proclaimed the neutrality of the United States in all international conflicts.

In 1792, President Washington ran for re-election and was unopposed. he left office in March 1797. on December 14, 1799, he died of pneumonia on his Virginia plantation.

I never thought that a non-fiction book about a sport I rarely follow would hold my attention, but after only a few pages of Seabiscuit: an American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand, I was hooked. the story of the little brown horse with the big heart, and the three men who overcame their own hardships to make him a champion, captured the imagination of a country in the grips of the Depression. That story is just as thrilling and uplifting today.

As speakers, we can learn something from Seabiscuit and horse racing in general. the sport provides a useful metaphor for public speaking.

A well delivered speech is like a well run horse race. think of the speaker as the jockey and the speech as the horse. it is the speaker’s job to prepare his speech well and then to get it from start to finish.

Horse racing is a sport that is subject to the whims of nature. Conditions can be hot, cold, wet, dusty, muddy. There is nothing that jockeys can do about the weather. they can only adjust to track conditions as best they can.

As speakers, we often have little say about the locations in which we speak. Thus, we should always try to visit the speaking venue before our speech (and this includes testing any equipment we need) so that we can become accustomed to it and make any necessary adjustments to our presentation.

In a horse race, the jockey wants to get off to a good start and have his horse well positioned.

As speakers, we want to get our speeches off to a strong start. we want our audiences following us from the outset. we do not want to lose their attention early and then have to catch up. how can we get off to a good start? There are many ways; for example, we can ask a provocative question, recite a compelling quotation or tell a captivating story. the key is to get the audience involved from the beginning and wanting to hear more.

A good jockey controls his horse and helps it find its natural pace and rhythm in a race.

So too, we need to develop a pace and a rhythm that suits our speaking style and is comfortable for us. However, we need to be ready to modulate our speaking rhythm, as necessary, to ensure that our audiences stay with us.

A horse race goes through several transitions: the starting gate; the straightaway; the first turn; the backstretch; the final turn; the homestretch; and the finish line. Jockey and horse must navigate these transitions carefully and smoothly.

A speech also has transitions. Speakers must ensure that these transitions are fluid and made in a way that lets the audience know that a new topic or section of the speech is being introduced.

Watch a jockey throughout a race and you will see that he is constantly checking his surroundings: his horse; the other horses and riders; the track; the track markers. Depending on what is going on around him, he makes adjustments accordingly.

Speakers also need to be aware of their surroundings. we should make eye contact with all sections of the audience. we should use the speaking area to maximum effect. we should take care that we are not obstructing the audience’s view of any material that we have displayed. Do the people at the back appear to be having a hard time hearing? if so, we should project our voices more.

Every jockey wants his horse to have a strong finishing kick. One that will propel him to victory at the wire.

As speakers, we should aim to finish strong every time and leave our audiences with a lasting impression. how to do this? Let’s return to the metaphor. Where does a horse race end? Pretty much where it began because the track is an oval. That’s the way it should be with a speech.

Many people think of a speech as something that is linear. I think that the best speeches are those that come full circle. if we start with a provocative question, we should provide an answer or leave the audience with another question to ponder. if we start with a quote from a famous person, we can end with another quote by that person or perhaps someone else. if we start a story and then transition into the body of your speech without finishing it, we should come back to it. the key is to close the loop in a polished manner that crystallizes our message in the minds of our listeners.

Of course, there is a lot more to be said about each of the elements of a speech mentioned above. But the horse racing metaphor provides an easy-to-remember list of some of the key things to keep in mind in addition to the content of your speech.

PROVO – after dropping the first set, the third-ranked BYU men’s volleyball team took the next three sets to top the Cal Baptist Lancers (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 28-26) for the second night in a row Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse.

“There was a little bit of focus lost midway through some of those sets,” said BYU coach Chris McGown. “When we decided to be focused the whole way through, I think that was the big difference. we made a conscience choice to be energetic. after CBU made a big play we just refocused. we did a good job not letting them go on any runs. beyond that, I thought we handled any kind of offensive push from them rather well.”

Senior opposite Robb Stowell led all players with 16 kills. Junior setter Ryan Boyce posted 10 digs and directed the Cougar offense with 48 assists. Junior middle blocker Russ Lavaja’s led all players with eight blocks. Freshman outside Josue Rivera contributed 15 kills, seven digs and five blocks.

Cal Baptist went up 5-1 to start the first set, but with senior middle blocker Futi Tavana serving, BYU was quick to answer with three points of its own to come within one.

The Cougars and Lancers exchanged points to bring the set to an 8-8 tie and with a kill by Rivera, BYU took its first lead of the night. Balanced scoring brought the set to 17-17 when the Lancers came back on top at 18-17. Cal Baptist then put themselves up by four, the largest lead of the set. after trailing by four, a kill by Stowell and two Tavana blocks closed the gap to 24-22, but BYU was not able to hold on, dropping the first set 25-22.

The Cougars came out strong in the second, keeping a consistent lead over the Lancers. Stowell hit a big kill to put BYU up 15-10, the largest lead to that point. the Lancers came within three but were unable to stop the Cougars, who went on to take the set 25-21.

BYU took the lead in the beginning of the third set until Cal Baptist went up 12-11, its first lead since the initial point of the set. BYU quickly took back the lead, 13-12 thanks to a block by Lavaja. the Cougars remained in the lead the rest of the set. Freshman opposite hitter Phil Fuchs put the game away for BYU, 25-19.

The Cougars’ momentum carried into the fourth set as BYU never surrendered after jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead. Cal Baptist worked its way back to tie the score at 20-20. the two teams exchanged points until Fuchs hit a big kill for a 24-23 BYU lead.

With three match points on the line, the Lancers held on until Stowell set up the Cougars’ fourth match point. with an error by Cal Baptist, BYU wrapped up with a final 28-26 score.

Cal Baptist had three players post double-digit kills and Aaron McCalmont had 11 digs for the Lancers.

BYU returns to action next weekend when it hosts UC Santa Barbara on Friday and Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse.

The Apprentice is a well known reality TV series which sees a group of promising businessmen and women compete against each other to become Alan Sugars apprentice. Dubbed as being the job interview from hell, the winner is given the chance of a 100,000 a year job. Past winners have gone on to work at Sugar’s electronics manufacturing company Amstrad as well as at one of his many other business ventures. The U.S has their own version of The Apprentice which is run be entrepreneur Donald Trump. The UK series is BAFTA award winning and continues to increase in popularity with every series.

To date there have been five apprentice seasons in total with series six expected to be aired sometime this year. The first and second series were originally shown in 2005 and 2006 on BBC two, however, it became so popular that Series 3 in 2007 was shown on BBC one. The fourth series was shown in March 2008 and the most recent fifth series in March 2009.

Due to the popularity there have been a number of spin offs of the TV show created. these include The Apprentice: You’re Fired, which is shown after each episode of The Apprentice to discuss all the drama. There have also been celebrity charity episodes as well as special one off episodes based on particular candidates.

Series five was one of the best yet and was won by Yasmina Siadatan. The series aired from 25 March 2009 for twelve weeks and saw more contestants try to convince Alan Sugar to hire them. The group had numerous challenges to complete including setting up a cleaning business, providing corporate catering, creating an original piece of home fitness equipment and produce and sell bath and beauty products. However, perhaps one of the most memorable challenges was to produce a brand identity for a new breakfast cereal. this led to the creation of ‘Pants Man’ which contestant Philip Taylor will probably never be able to forget.

The new Apprentice season looks like it may well be delayed this year. Rumour has it that there are impartiality worries since Sir Alan Sugar was made a Labour peer in 2009. it is not yet known when series six will hit our screens but it is thought it may not be until the election has taken place.

Executive coach Randi Raskin Nash says that if you want to get things accomplished before the end of the year, you need to be smart about it. SMART is an acronym to keep in mind when setting goals, personal or professional. there are actually many effective variations for what it stands for, but here’s one that tried and true: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. a quick Google search will yield other variations (e.g., Significant, Motivating, Agreed upon, Realistic, and Trackable) since SMART goal setting has been around for quite a while. However you spell it, it’s a great place to begin in working towards setting and achieving what matters most to you.

So how does SMART work? Here’s a look at the five parts of the goal-setting mnemonic:

Step one – Specific: Raskin Nash says the goals you set should be concrete and as specific as possible. for example, if you want to increase your sales, you should figure out a specific goal you want to achieve, like signing on four new clients (specific) who meet a certain criteria (spell out to be even more specific), not increase my client base (not specific).

Step Two – Measurable: when setting your goal ask yourself, how will I know I’m on track, how will I know I’ve succeeded? That’s the Measurable part of your goal. for example, if you want to increase your networking contacts, promise to go to one new event a week for 2 months, and introduce yourself to at least five new people. That’s more measurable (and more specific) than just saying that you want to meet more people. even better, consider measurable ways in which you will follow up with those new people to create win-win relationships.

Step Three – Attainable: Be realistic. You’re setting yourself up for failure if you come up with a goal that is impossible to achieve, like losing 50 pounds in six weeks. instead, come up with a goal like losing, say, 10 pounds over that time frame. the executive coach says, Don’t make it so attainable that you already have it, it’s a goal. so stretch, but know it’s possible so you can build momentum by achieving it.

Step four – Relevant: Is this a goal that really matters to you? Is it relevant to your dreams, your vision, your values, your priorities? Raskin Nash says, if you’re going to take the time to set SMART goals for yourself, personally or professionally, make sure they’re really on point, really focused on what’s important to you.

Step five – Time-Bound: Come up with a specific time frame to complete the goal. for example, Raskin Nash suggests using the time between now and the end of the year as a good time to position yourself and get specific goals off your to-do list and/or set yourself up for success in the new Year.

Here’s another variation of SMART. SMARTER: E for Evaluate and R for Redo if really needed. Periodically evaluate your goals to ensure they’re in line with your priorities, and, if not, redo them, but keep them SMART

History has it ways of revealing the truth, especially when it comes to drafting great basketball players. Although, fans will ultimately decide to attend the games based on talent level and character of the players. the Portland Trail Blazers in recent years have had to make some dramatic and unfavorable decisions. Now I won’t talk about the Micheal Jordan and Sam Bowie mistake. after all, the dust has settled and Micheal Jordan is arguable the greatest basketball player of all time. This leads me to the decision concerning drafting Greg Oden over Kevin Durant. so, lets break down and decide who will be the winner. Will it be the Portland Trail Blazers or the Oklahoma City Thunder.

First, Kevin Durant will be playing in his first All-Star game on Feb, 14, 2010. Durant was chosen by the Western Conference coaches, so the coaches must respect his game. Kevin Durant is avg 29.3 ppg, 7.30 rebounds, 3.0 assist per game, and Kevin is not letting up. the Oklahoma City Thunder have won more games this year than last year. for this reason, Kevin Durant is a much better offensive player than Greg Oden. In comparison, Greg Oden is averaging 11.1 ppg, 9 rebounds, and.09 apg. even thou Greg is out for the reminder of the season with another knee injury. Injuries has cost Greg Oden a lot of games, and we don’t really know his full offensive abilities. Although, Greg Oden has a larger frame, he should be able to post anyone down low. Greg will have the advantage when it comes to posting smaller players.

Next, Greg Oden has the ability to change the way teams play offense. Oden blocking potential and ability to run the floor is outstanding. He has great defensive attributes in the painted area. Greg Oden is a legit 7 footer with a long wing span. Oden has the ability to score, rebound, block shots, and intimidate opponents. He remind me a lot of a young Bill Russell, but much stronger. At this point, we will have to wait and find out if Greg Oden is truly over the Microfracture and ailing knees. In opposition, Kevin Durant is not a defensive player. He is more of a slasher and jump shooter. He don’t really mix it up down low. I think Kevin would do himself some good if he went into the weight room, and started bulking up. If Durant committed to strength workouts, he would be scary. Both of these guys are still young and improving. I would give the edge to Greg Oden concerning defense Power.

Both players are similar when it comes to winning. Both Greg and Kevin was voted first team High – School All Americans in March of 2007. At Ohio State Greg Oden was described by many professional agents as a once in a life time type player. Mainly because of Greg’s blocking potential and his ability to post double stats. on the contrary, Kevin Durant had a outstanding year at Texas. At 6’9, Kevin is capable of playing shooting guard, point guard, and small forward. Kevin Durant is built to be a All – Star for years to come.

Last but not least, Hopefully both players will have outstanding NBA careers. I think the jury is still out on the decision by the Portland Trail Blazers. I know a lot of my friends mention the ghost of Micheal Jordan and how many championships we should have won. the Blazers don’t have to re-live the past, but they must know now that the window of opportunity is knocking loud, and we have probably the best center we’ve had since Bill Walton. In spite of injuries, Greg Oden will give us a chance to win a championship some day.
